Myrtle BeachHistory of evolution of Myrtle Beach

Pawley's Island which lies to the south of Myrtle Beach was the first area of Horry County to be developed before the Civil War as most of the area's other beaches were inaccessible as they were overrun by tidal marshes. The origin of the development of Myrtle Beach can be traced back to the early twentieth century when a local timber company called Burroughs & Collins decided to develop its seaside holdings located in the area.  As the development progressed, the area came to be known as ‘New Town' at first but it then came to be called Myrtle Beach after the wild wax myrtles that grew in abundance in the area. Towards the mid twentieth century, Myrtle Beach developed very rapidly as it became more accessible with the construction of new highways and airports which linked this coastal paradise to the rest of the country. Today this Grand Strand shoreline which includes the towns of Briarcliffe, Atlantic Beach, North Myrtle Beach, Surfside Beach, Murrell's Inlet, Pawley's Island, and Garden City is a hub of entertainment and recreational activity that appeals to one and all.
